Every year Burlington hosts the Discover Jazz festival and brings in great talent from all corners of the jazz world. This year was no exception as the air was filled with the music of various artists from morning well into the night.
My last two days have been focused on seeing some of this talent. The immersion began Tuesday evening with an visit to the Flynn Space to see one show. It proved to be a very popular show with a headliner that sold out tickets to a standing room only audience, The Grace Kelly Quintet. An amazingly talented girl that is truly a blessing on the modern jazz scene and a mark of what the next generation of jazz musicians holds.
The next stop that evening was a trip down the block to Nectar's, home of some great gravy fries and, for that night starting at ten pm, Will Bernard and his fine group. I sadly missed out on Grace Kelly, but the night was still dazzling getting to hear the great guitar work of Will Bernard, Tim Luntzel on bass, Stanton Moore on drums and Robert Walter on organ. New music from Will's latest CD, Blue Plate Special, was played with some older classics and a sample of an, as yet, unreleased tune.
The night schedule for both the Flynn Space and Nectar's looks to be a great arrangement for the rest of the festival and a full schedule of Discover Jazz events can be found on the festival's website. < http://www.discoverjazz.com >
After that fun night came an early morning to prep and wander up and down Church street for samples of local musicians playing on the street and on the two stages on either end of the marketplace.
Bands seen in today's, Wednesday's, wanderings included very talented groups from local schools, including The Stafford All-stars from the Rutland Stafford Technical Center and the more local BHS 8am Jazz Band on the fountain mounted stage at the top of the marketplace. At the bottom of the street, in front of city hall, I was marveled by the young talent playing from the Fairfield Center middle school, 52 Soul Drive.
So far this year's festival has already impressed many people, and there's still more to come. Day or night there's something to go see and hear all along the Church Street Marketplace that's bound to entertain. This holds true for the scheduled shows and the great mix of performers playing at places like Leunig's Bistro on College street or the street performs dotting the open spaces in front of stores.
