Sacred Heart Cathedral advances, Lincoln falls in CIF State Volleyball Championships

Two San Francisco squads, the Lincoln Mustangs (San Francisco Section champions) and Sacred Heart Cathedral Fightin' Irish (Central Coast Section Division III champions) hosted first round games in the Northern California bracket of the CIF State Volleyball championships Tuesday evening.

In Division I play at Lincoln High, the smaller Mustangs (31-6) gave the Nevada Union Lady Miners (35-10), all they could handle before falling in four sets 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 27-25. The Lady Miners advance to the Division I semifinal against the Salinas Cowboys on Saturday November 28th, 2009. The Cowboys (27-4) defeated the Granada Matadors (23-5) in four sets 25-19, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23.

In Division III play at Sacred Heart Cathedral, the Fightin' Irish (28-11) easily defeated the Enterprise Hornets (17-23) in three sets 25-12, 25-11, 25-9. The Irish advance to the semifinals against the Sir Francis Drake Pirates. The Pirates (33-5) knocked off the El Camino Eagles (32-7) in four sets 25-17, 24-26, 25-10, 25-15.
