President Obama’s approval rating in polls is dropping according to recent numbers just out. Both Rasmussen and Gallup are reporting steady drops in the President’s support, particularly among independent voters. Polls yesterday showed the President’s ratings below 50% in Ohio and Virginia, which are two key swing states. It is now clear to everyone that Mr. Obama and the Democratic Party are vulnerable and that voters are becoming increasingly unhappy with their policies. Rasmussen also did a poll on the ten top issues to Americans and in eight of them Republicans Party is trusted more, with the exception of education and healthcare. The generic congressional ballots have Republicans ahead for the first time in years. Could things be looking up to the GOP?

I would argue yes and no. The Republican Party has fully yet to get it’s act together. The scandals of John Ensign and Mark Sanford are still fresh in the minds of people. Things are looking up because the Democrats are over reaching and the public knows it. If Republicans make gains in 2010, it will be because the liberals shot themselves in the foot. What Republicans need to do is come forward with ideas that will contrast those the Democrats put forward. They also need to continue to be vocal in the media with their opposition, because that is helping. Attacking these bad ideas is slowly winning over voters and just may end up kicking Democrats out of office.

I am by no means suggesting that the Democratic Party and President Obama are weak, because they are not. Obama still has an approval rating above 50% and Democrats still control Congress for another year and a half. I am pointing out an opening and that things are looking more promising for the GOP. If the unemployment rate goes above 10%, which all experts believe that it will, it would be cataclysmic for Democrats. They were elected to fix the economy and have failed to do so. More people are now holding the Democrats accountable, rightfully so, for their failure to fix the problem. The out of control spending, their desire for tax increases, government control spending, and a failed stimulus package is putting serious doubts in the minds of voters, especially independent ones.
