Next week, the film "The Stoning of Soraya M." will open in select movie theaters across the country. The producer of "The Passion of the Christ" produced this film as well and, because of its graphic depiction of the stoning, carries a similar warning.
Based on the novel of the same name by the fearless French-Iranian journalist Freidoune Sahebjam, the book recounts one of his experiences in Iran. An older woman pours out to Sahebjam the tale of her village's recent murder of her niece. The book, although not technically a "Christian" novel, tells such a compelling and truthful story that I encourage all Christian adults to read it. Ironically enough, Jesus himself stopped a similar stoning, although the woman he delivered was probably guilty. Now we have his example to live by and the truth of what he said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
In its purest form, the book gives a glimpse into the corrupt and humiliating way Islam treats women. In its overall theme, the book warns about the ultimate conclusion of violence against women, mob rule and cowardice. But, the hope that the book provides lies in the courage of the older woman to tell the truth, and that justice has ultimately begun by examining these actions under the microscope of the world's media.
With the disturbing reports about Iran's recent political election, and the persecution of protesters and dissidents, the book - published in the U.S. in 1990 - provides some deep insight into the roots of the situation. However, despite the emotional impact of the book and the upcoming film, readers should take care not to allow their emotions to condemn all Iranians or Muslims. Perhaps, the message of the book will also inspire the scrutinizing of our own churches', communities' and courts' decisions.
Read The Stoning of Soraya M. and support the film when it opens on Friday, June 26. The only Chicago area theatre screening the film is Landmark's Century Centre Cinema at 2828 North Clark St., Chicago, IL 60657.
