The real Allison Dubois
Following the season finale of NBC’s “Medium”, fans were unsure of the fate of the five-year series in which medium Allison Dubois, played by Patricia Arquette, uses her psychic gifts to assist the Phoenix district attorney’s office in solving violent crimes, often before the heinous acts come to fruition. In the final episode of the season, Arquette’s character lay in a coma after an unattended brain tumor caused a stroke, leaving her unresponsive and comatose.
At the end of May, however, “Medium” producers and fans alike breathed a collective sigh of relief as CBS announced that it would be taking on the show for its Friday night line-up. Producers of “Medium” assure fans that the show will not be altered in its content or quality. “Medium” will air on CBS between “Ghost Whisperer” and “Numb3rs” at 8:00 p.m. EST beginning this fall.
But who is Allison Dubois? Dubois is not a character created by clever television writers and producers. “Medium” is based on the life of medium Allison Dubois, and the show closely mirrors her real experiences. In the program, Dubois with husband Joe, who maintains his career as an engineer, raise three daughters in Phoenix, AZ. Often, the story lines allude to the genetic link between Dubois’ gift and the gifts which her daughters also possess. In reality, all of the above describe the real life of Allison Dubois.
One major discrepancy can be noted between the portrayal of Dubois and her true life. Arquette’s dreams are the apparent source of her mediumistic visions on the show. These dreams wake her in the middle of the night; whereupon, she moves into the kitchen to record the information receives in said dreams. According to the real Allison Dubois, her visions actually occur when she is awake, though she does occasionally have revelations during dreams.
