Pros:
-50 cents per beer
-friendly DJ willing to play anything you want provided you show him some cleavage and/or introduce him to Mr. Washington
-pool tables/general college bar atmosphere make it easy to wax nostalgic
-cheap beer makes everyone feel like a Queen
Cons:
-located on the Upper West Side i.e. nowhere near anyone I know (might be different by you)
-gets loud/ crowded hence the bathrooms get gross, and you can’t hear what anyone is saying unless you’re right next to them
-those 50 cent beers you’re buying? Yep, they’re Coor’s Light
Commentary:
Have you ever noticed that it actually hurts to buy a six pack at the local bodega? I go to the back, pick out my six pack of choice, show the man my ID (is it weird that I get a sick pleasure out of being carded?), and head out the door. Usually I will have dropped about $12 on my 6 beers, and I always grumble to myself as I fork it over.
Now take your usual bar experience. You go in, have a seat, and even if you only have a few drinks, you’re still paying an average of seven bucks a beer give or take tip. While I might chide myself for drinking too much, or spending too much money going out, I rarely regret the decision.
So what is it about the bar experience that makes it so worth it? The chance of meeting someone new? The relief of not asking anyone to host a party night? An honest affinity for gross bathrooms? For me, it’s the chance to be somewhere different and see something that I haven’t seen before. At best, I’ll have an amazing night surrounded by bizarre people who will provide plenty of fodder for online rambling and anecdotes at highbrow parties. At worst I’ll have an awesome night with my friends, and hey if that’s the risk, why not just go out.
Bourbon Street offers a place to dance around and get drunk on light beer with your friends for very little money. I’ve been there a few times and the clientele is always different, so I can’t honestly say who to expect people-wise. I will say that going with a group of your friends will definitely result in good times being had by all, especially when no one wakes up the next morning cringing at an empty wallet full of receipts.
I’ll admit, this article was originally a bar review, but do tell?
Why do you prefer the bar experience to anything else?
