Mitch and Cam – a new couple to love.

ABC Television has a fresh twist on a tired story with all of the characters in “Modern Family” but it’s particularly nice to see that the family includes a gay couple who have adopted a child.

The characters of Mitchell and Cameron are just part of a terrific ensemble, but actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet’s fresh approach make them easy to love.

Ferguson’s Mitch is an uptight professional who you can tell that his character was always made fun of when growing up. Stonestreet’s Cam who likes to wear pink and paisley actually demonstrates that his character is more than a cream puff as he shows a love for football which balances out his character’s typical gay qualities including a love for musicals and dance.

Ferguson and Stonestreet are both top notch, bringing subtle nuances to their portrayals. Ferguson is a more familiar face to TV viewers has he’s been in a few shows that didn’t quite take off. And Stonestreet is perhaps best recognized by “CSI” fans.

But whatever they have played in the past and whatever they have in their future, these are signature roles and will likely be considered classic TV characters for years to come.

Catch “Modern Family” on ABC on Wednesday nights at 9pm.
