High ceilings add to the dramatic design of the new Wild Horse Pass Casino.Less than a year after opening the new Lone Butte Casino, the Gila River Indian Community debuts its newest entry into the Phoenix-area gaming scene with the stunning new Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino. Housing more than 1,000 slot and video poker machines, 46 table games and 25 poker tables on its 100,000 square-foot gaming floor, the new resort opens to the public on Friday, October 30, at 9 p.m. With its wide assortment of dining venues, five bars and lounges, a Vegas-style nightclub (Aria opening in November) plus the new Ovations LIVE! 1400-seat theater and a 242-room hotel, the property truly brings to Phoenix what CEO Harold Baugus calls an “overall entertainment package.”

With construction crews still putting last-minute touches on the property, casino staffers and management were on hand this week to give members of the media a first-hand look at the new $200 million property. Punctuated by soaring ceilings in the main gaming area, the swank casino design (which would just as easily fit into the Las Vegas market) features lots of sophisticated natural materials as well as such striking design elements as sparkling hand-blown glass lighting sculptures and a hand-painted mural of horses racing across the desert.

In addition to the posh new digs, players will appreciate the wide array of gaming machines including 600 of the newest slots including two of the hottest games from WMS Gaming -- the popular “Wizard of Oz” and interactive “Star Trek” slots plus 400 favorite games brought over from the former location. Card players will be catered to as well in the casino’s new spacious poker room and at tables offering blackjack, Pai Gow, 3-Card Poker and Let-It-Ride. High-limit gaming is available in a separate section of the casino with $5-and-up slot machines plus table games currently offering $25 - $500 limits. (Look for higher limits in the future.) Another highlight of the gaming floor: A section of the casino is enclosed as a non-smoking area.

Contributing greatly to making the new casino resort more than simply a gaming destination is the varied selection of new restaurants on-site including Arizona’s first location for “Shula’s American Steak House.” With its dark wood floors and tables elegantly outfitted in white linens, this tribute to the ’74 Super Bowl champs offers diners a high-end menu of corn-fed beef, seafood entrees and traditional sides such as creamed spinach and a variety of spud preparations including the intriguing “lobster mashed potatoes.” For a more casual meal, the downstairs “Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar & Grill” will offer the chain’s menu of Oriental specialties prepared with a contemporary twist. Other dining spots include a food court with a Fatburger, a Boar’s Head Deli, a Famiglia Pizzeria and Tamales Mexican food. Also on-hand is the casino’s own comfort-food haven, Café 24/7, with its delectable selection of baked goods.

Adjoining the casino is the resort’s new 10-story hotel which features more than 200 rooms including 39 suites along with a spa and pool. The hotel also offers 12,000 square-feet of meeting space.
