Mike Birbiglia

Comic Mike Birbiglia loves two things in life. One of them, of course, is comedy. The other is pizza. “If you look on my (web-site) I have a whole area for pizza recommendations,” he says from his apartment in Manhattan, “which is marvelous. And someone did do one for Cincinnati. I think a few people did. Now whenever I travel somewhere I just look on the board and see what pizza place they recommend.”

The Georgetown University graduate, who contributes a regular segment called “My Secret Public Journal” to The Bob & Tom Show, likes to take situations from his life and flesh out funny observations and present them like a storyteller. A hilarious storyteller. He has even become a regular contributor to the This American Life radio program heard nationally via Public Radio International (WVXU 91.7 locally). Indeed it was the success his radio appearances that moved in that direction. He also sights a particular joke as the cornerstone of his comedy today. It can be heard his debut CD Two Drink Mike, and subsequently became the basis for the second CD My Secret Public Journal Live.

“(It’s) the awkward situation’s more awkward joke, where what I should have said was nothing, what I did say was ‘you’d be surprised.’” He explains. “I was moving a bed into my apartment, and this woman from the building opened the door for me with her key and she said ‘I’m not worried, a rapist wouldn’t have bed like that.’ And what I should have said was nothing what I did say was, ‘you’d be surprised.’ (Secret Public Journal Love was) the cream of the crop of the funniest most awkward things that have occurred to me over the years.”

He claims that he hardly needs to embellish his musings. “I really don’t. I try to find the funniest, truest thing about whatever happened to me. I try to make my show something of a conversation. It’s fun that way. It kind of makes it different every time.” His tales would seemingly make a good book, and there is indeed a connection there.

Since grade school, Birbigia has had thoughts of being an author, and his successful career on stage may have finally brought him closer to achieving that goal. “I’ve had some discussions with some very large publishing houses about doing a book,” he says. “I was sort of courted. I got a lot of phone calls because recently the New York Post did a thing where they called me one of the breakout stars of 2005. And it was me, and like, people who are actually stars like Keri Russell.”

Mike Birbiglia performs at Go Bananas in the Festival market Place, Montgomery, Thursday June 25 through Saturday June 27. Showtime is 8:00 with a 10:30 Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $22. 513-984-9288 gobananascomedy.com
