It’s really hard to ignore at this point. The economy is officially in the tank, nobody really sounds like they have any idea how to fix it, and any glimmer of hope seems to be followed by another big drop. But on the bright side, beer’s still cheap.

That’s right folks, nothing soothes the pain of seeing the bottom drop out of the economy like downing dangerous amounts of alcohol until those ads for medical testing on the T start to look like a good idea. So I present to you my three best recession friendly bars in Boston:

1. Roggies On The Avenue 1249 Commonwealth Avenue (Allston)

It’s hard to argue with a place that serves dollar drafts every day, even if there is a cover charge at night. But considering that their dollar beer range includes Molson and Michelob Amber Bock as well as the usual $1 swill, they run regular food specials, and they have plenty of big screen TVs, this may be the best bet for these hard times.

2. Bukowski’s Tavern 50 Dalton Street (Back Bay)

The Back Bay isn’t the sort of place you’d expect to go to drink or eat on the cheap, but Bukowski’s Tavern honors their patron saint of bum-ness with burgers for basically whatever you’ve got on you, and a selection of beers ranging from low-grade abrasives like PBR to high-quality craft beers for when your scratch-off ticket comes through.

3. The People’s Republik 876 Massachusetts Avenue (Cambridge)

The Republik doesn’t offer anything all that special, but when the topic of total financial meltdown comes up, it’s always good to remember the Soviet Union and communism, to get a little perspective. This would also, presumably, be the perfect place to hide out when Super-Putin rears his head in Alaskan airspace and we have to dispatch the Power Rangers to fight him. Or something.
