The Jets talked all week, and they continued to talk Sunday. The Patriots did absolutely nothing to shut them up.
The Patriots played their worst all around half of football since 2002. They were terrible defensively, and worse offensively.
Give credit to the Jets’ defense. They confused the Patriots, they forced delay of game penalties with their pre-snap movement, and they made every play they have a chance to make.
Meanwhile, the Patriots’ defense couldn’t keep one of the worst offenses they’ll see this year out of the endzone, when they had a chance to make a big play the ball slipped through their hands, and they couldn’t get off the field when it mattered.
All around, this was an eye opening game for both teams.
For the Jets, they’ve announced themselves as a threat in the AFC. For the Patriots, they’ve (at least to this point) proven they have no answers to all of the preseason questions.
Joey Galloway was terrible. He ran bad routes, he dropped balls, and he couldn’t get open. He’s no Wes Welker. He’s not even Sam Aiken.
Julian Edelman had a good game, but he made some costly mistakes on routes and dropped a few balls. His decision to take the ball out of the endzone on a Jets kickoff in the fourth quarter was yet another rookie mistake.
Tom Brady couldn’t make any plays, but I’m not sure there were plays out there for him to make. The Jets secondary did a great job on Randy Moss, and the rest of the Patriots wide receivers just weren’t good enough.
The loss of Josh McDaniels is really hurting the Patriots. Their offense is predictable, it has no rhythm, and looks disjointed and pedestrian. And that’s not just against the Jets. They were bad against Buffalo as well.
Right now, this Patriots’ team is nothing like everyone expected. They’re average offensively and very, very mediocre defensively.
The loss of Jerod Mayo was evident, as was the loss of Richard Seymour.
The Patriots have a lot of questions they need to answer quickly, especially when you consider that the team coming in next week (the Falcons) is much, much better than the team they were just embarrassed by.
Kerry Rhodes said the Jets wanted to embarrass the Patriots.
Mission accomplished.
Game Notes:
Tom Brady lost his first regular season game since December 10th of 2006.
This was only the second time a rookie quarterback has beaten the Patriots since Belichick took over as head coach. The other rookie quarterback was Ben Roethlisberger.
Julian Edelman had 8 receptions for 98 yards, leading all receivers in his rookie debut. Randy Moss was held to 4 receptions for 24 yard, even though he was single-covered by Darrelle Revis for most of the game.
The Patriots were held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since December 10th, 2006, when they were shut out by the Miami Dolphins 21-0.
The Jets are now alone in first place in the AFC East with a 2-0 record.
