Does a healthy Tom Brady equal Super Bowl for Patriots?

Sorry Patriots’ fans, but you’re just not going to get rich betting on the Patriots to win Super Bowl XLIV. That’s not to say you won’t win the bet, just that it’s not going to pay off all that much.

The Patriots, who opened after February’s Super Bowl as 6/1 favorites to win next season’s Super Bowl, are currently 4/1 favorites. That’s an insane number.

In 2002, the Patriots were sitting at 19-1 when I bet on them to win the Super Bowl…and they had just WON a Super Bowl.

Of course, Vegas was right and the 2002 Patriots weren’t even a playoff team. But had they won, I would have turned my $25 into whatever 19 times $25 is (they don’t pay me to know math). This season, a $25 bet would return a measly $100.

Hardly worth the effort required to fill out the betting slip.

The Steelers are still sitting at 7/1. Vegas thinks we’re about to see another Patriots-Steelers AFC championship game. Which would be tremendous drama, as the Patriots and Steelers are the only two teams who can legitimately lay claim to the title of “team of the decade” in the 00s.

The Manning brothers are both sitting at 8/1, while Tony Romo and the insanely overrated Cowboys are the worst bet in Vegas at 9/1.

Vegas agrees with me on the Eagles, having them at 12/1 (sorry Philadelphia, your Eagles have no business being favored to win anything…let alone the Super Bowl).

The Chicago Bears, who opened at 28/1 and are now sitting at 15/1. Vegas clearly likes the acquisition of Orlando Pace. Or maybe it was that Cutler guy?

The biggest jump since the Super Bowl? The Kansas City Chiefs. Before Matt Cassel, they were whopping 100/1 long-shots to win the Super Bowl. Since trading for Cassel, they’ve improved to 40/1.

The longest odds belong to the lowly Detroit Lions, who are still an awful bet at 100/1. But hey, two months ago they were 150/1, so they’re making progress!

The Vikings’ odds have improved from 22/1 to 12/1 since the Favre drama started. Obviously nobody in Vegas watched a Jets game last season.

Anyway, the point here is this: if you’re heading to Vegas, don’t bother putting money on the Patriots to win the Super Bowl.

Bet on the Red Sox to win the World Series, who are a slightly bigger payoff at 9/2.
