With LaMont Jordan likely not returning to for the 2009 season, and Lawrence Maroney unable to put together a healthy season, there was a depth problem at the running back position in New England.
The Patriots have rectified that situation.
The Patriots signed former Jacksonville running back Fred Taylor to a two year contract worth about $5 million.
Bill Belichick had this to say about the newest member of his football team:
I have tremendous respect for Fred Taylor, both as a person and as a player whose production is outstanding. I look forward to working with Fred as he joins the rest of our running back group.
There are only 15 running backs in NFL history who have rushed for more yards than Fred Taylor. Last season, he surpassed the 11,000 yard mark.
Taylor has quietly been one of the best running backs in NFL history.
There were indications yesterday that Taylor was going to sign with the Buffalo Bills. The Bills are looking to add depth just in case Marshawn Lynch’s legal problems cost him a couple of games next season. Taylor would have been the perfect insurance policy.
But instead, he’s a perfect addition to your New England Patriots.
