The Miami Dolphins couldn’t do a thing on offense all day long, but they still managed to defeat the New York Jets 30-25 on Sunday, sweeping the season series.
There’s a common thread among NFL teams with bad, or inexperienced, head coaches: they get burned on special teams.
The Jets won every significant statistical category except two: return yards and the final score. Ted Ginn was demoted on offense to fourth of fifth string wide receiver, but he’s still the number one kick returner.
His returns of 100 and 101 yards, both for touchdowns, kept the Dolphins in a game they had no business winning.
Then Rex Ryan’s defense gave up their only bad drive of the game. For all intents and purposes, the Dolphins put the game away with a 13 play, 7:47 drive that ended in a 5 yard touchdown pass from Chad Henne to TE Joey Haynos.
Mark Sanchez, who had his best game since the last time he played the Dolphins, was unable to get the Jets into the endzone late in the fourth quarter. The Jets potential game winning drive fizzled as Sanchez couldn’t find Dustin Keller in the back of the endzone with 1:16 left to play.
The first half of this game was awful. It was hard to watch. But once again, the Dolphins put together an entertaining second half. Last week, it was their entertaining collapse to the Saints. This week, it was their electric special teams play.
The Dolphins might be a half game back of the Jets in the standings, but they swept the season series. They’re the second best team in the AFC East right now.
Next week, they try to prove they’re still the best against your New England Patriots.
