How do we know God loves us?
John 15:3
Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Romans 5:8
But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 3:16
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
Why does God love us like this?
1 John 3:1-3
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knows us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 And every man that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.
I need to be able to count on that love, people always leave me alone when times get hard or I get messed up. What about God, will he leave me alone too?
Romans 8:35
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Romans 8:37-39
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
How much does God really love me? When Jesus prayed in John 17, He addressed this love.
John 17:20-26
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that you have sent me.
22 And the glory which you gave me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and you in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that you have sent me, and have loved them, as you have loved me.
24 Father, I will that they also, whom you have given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which you have given me: for you loved me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world has not known you: but I have known you, and these have known that you have sent me.
26 And I have declared to them your name, and will declare it: that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.
Jesus made it very clear that God our Father loves us the same way He loves Jesus (v. 23). Jesus loves us to the point He gave His life for us (John 15:3, Romans 5:8, 1 John 3:16) and He asked Father that we would be with Him and see His glory (v. 24).
This is our God, the God who is love. My prayer for you today is the same as the prayer Paul set before God for the Ephesians.
Ephesians 3:14-20
14 For this cause I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge, that you might be filled with all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
21 To him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
Do you desire to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and to know His love? Please pray with me:
Lord Jesus, I come before you in faith and ask you to forgive me of all my sin. I believe that you came in the flesh, gave your life for me on the cross, and were raised from the dead so that I may be born of your Spirit. I ask you to come into my heart, to be my Lord and Savior, and fill me with your love. Holy Spirit, I ask you to come into my heart and give me the power to live a life that is pleasing to God my Father, please teach me His ways.
