In an effort to educate the public about the importance of skin cancer screening, The Skin Cancer Foundation is sending volunteer dermatologists and an RV equipped with two exam rooms to travel to numerous cities across the United States to offer free skin cancer screenings. Each year more than $10,000 people die of skin cancer and regular screenings are key to detecting and curing the cancer while in its early stages. The screening involves a brief three to five minute scan with the use of a magnifier that can closely scrutinize areas of the skin and detect skin irregularities. Last summer 39 cases of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, were detected early and treated by members of the tour.
