Anaheim goalie, Jean-Sebastian Giguere grew up in the Montreal area. The natural assumption is that his NHL aspirations included wanting to play for the Habs. Not so much.
"I hated the Canadiens when I was a kid. I was a huge Quebec Nordiques fan when I was growing up. I loved them, and I hated the Canadiens. That choice made me not so popular and I got a lot of grief from my family and friends growing up but that was ok to me. I've always sort of cheered for the underdog, so I liked pulling for Quebec. I always had a competition going with my friends and my family and the Canadiens and the Nordiques games were always great competitions and great games."
As bonafied member of the NHL, coming back to Montreal for his first All Star Game Giguere has a better appreciation of the history and specialness of this Habs organization. Anyone who has ever played here will tell you this is a first class organization and the players are treated very well. The fans are the best fans in hockey when you have success and when you win, and they are the toughest fans when you lose, and that can be tough. The fans here are incredibly knowledgeable and they are a Montreal Canadiens city, which is more than just being a Canadian city. The love the Habs and hate every other team. I am sure that it would be quite a place to play. To be here in Montreal for my first game is quite something special."
