During the election last November there was an amendment on the ballot in Arizona to put a ban on equality for same-sex marriage into the Constitution. The LGBT community, not only in Arizona but around the country, has realized the need to provide education to many different groups of people in many different ways. The First National Touring Company of Wicked has chosen to give their time to a cabaret performance called Defying Inequality and try to use the teachable moments their tour creates.
The following is the press release regarding the event:
On Monday, July 13, at 7:30PM, the First National Touring Company of Wicked will host Defying Inequality, a special evening of benefit cabaret performances promoting equality and civil rights. Held at Cherry Lounge & Pit, 411 S. Mill Avenue, Tempe, and featuring cast members from Wicked as well as special guest performers, this special one-night only event will benefit Marriage Equality USA.
Produced by company members of Wicked, the event will feature members of the cast and crew of the touring company including Katie Rose Clarke (Glinda), and Ben Liebert (Boq), as well as Kiki Vermont and other special guests.
Defying Inequality will feature different musical performances that support Wicked's theme of acceptance and illuminate the musical’s message that people should not be judged on first impressions, and that in these divisive times we must come together to support one another’s rights throughout the country and around the world.

Founded in 2000, Marriage Equality USA is an all-volunteer, national non-profit organization whose mission is to secure legally recognized civil marriage equality for all, at the federal and state level, without regard to gender identity or sexual orientation. The organization's sole purpose and focus is to end discrimination in civil marriage so that same-sex couples can enjoy the same legal and societal status as opposite-sex couples.
Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) understands how critical it is for a greater number of voices to be heard and often works in tandem with other state and national organizations. With greater numbers of people working together towards ending discrimination in civil marriage, MEUSA hopes to accomplish in the foreseeable future what truly is the inevitable, civil marriage for same-sex couples.
Marriage Equality USA will be joined at this event by several partners working locally and nationally in the fight for LGBT equality and acceptance. A “Community Information Area” will be available to help all attendees learn how they can help “Defy Inequality.”
