Watermelons are the fruit of summer and this year the crops are doing well. The warm dry spell of the last two weeks or so has ripened the melons and some have put on a new spur of growth, including some flowers
.
Stone Mountain watermelon
Two older varieties that I am growing this year are the Stone Mountain watermelon and the Rattlesnake. Stone Mountian was developed by Hastings Nursery back at the start of the 20th century and was touted as one of the most popular across the southeast. The smooth, dull green skin covered an almost perfectly round melon. When ripe the melon has a medium red flesh.
The Rattlesnake Watermelon
Rattlesnake is a well known variety that was grown for decades across the south, which is testiment to its ability to withstand all the southern summers give it. This melon is a long skinny light green in color with dark green stripes that run along the body of the fruit. A more traditional looking melon that ripens to a bright red flesh.
Of course it is too late to start watermelons now, but they should be on your list for next year if you like heiloom vegetables that taste great and do well in our hot, humid summers.
