This week we have a book for your gift list: Organic Gardening Down South by Nellie Neal.

The book is from an experienced gardener in Mississippi, (GardenMama) who tells us why it is a challenge to get things to grow in the south, and how to overcome those challenges.  From roses, the "fussy maiden aunts of the garden" to strawberries which "taste like cardboard"  Nellie leads us to what is successful and what we should avoid- unless you want a real challenge.

It is clear from the book that Nellie loves plants, but when asked what her favorite plant was, Nellie declared that it was whatever was in bloom at the time, or whatever fruit was ready to pick! This leads to a garden full of plants that sometimes have no particular order, but the diversity gives a place for animals, birds and insects as well as color. Many of the plants, both common and less known, are described with how to get the best out of them.  Of course everything in the hot humid south suffers from bugs and fungal problems, so these nasties are talked about too along with what to do about them.

So if you are attempting to garden organically anywhere in the south, then this book should be on your Christmas list!
