The start of the official holiday season is Thanksgiving, and you don’t have to be of any specific religion to enjoy the lights and delights of the season. The major gardens, as well as shopping malls in the area are hoping to get you, and your guests, through their doors. Here is what the major gardens are offering:
The StateBotanical Garden in Athens: This is always a great trip for the family. This time of year the camellias will all be in bloom, and the trails will help walk of some of those extra pounds that might appear. On Sunday, December 7th, they will host a Gardener’s Open House with decorations and living succulent wreaths. The open house is from 2-5pm. The gardens are open year round. Parking and entrance is free.
The Atlanta Botanic Gardens: The gardens will be hosting a Reindog parade for your pouch on 6th December. The holiday train that tours through the garden will be operating, and they have a 15 foot Christmas tree decorated with traditional glass ornaments and some that show endangered frogs. The train and decorations will be available from Friday 28th until the end of the season.
The Atlanta History Center: Although this is a history center the gardens are a treat for everyone. The grounds will be illuminated for Candlelight Nights on 9th and 16 December, 5.30-9pm.
For the holiday season they will host a collection of Norman Rockwell's Home for the Holidays clips and tearsheets from the Saturday Evening Post.
Callaway Gardens: As usual this wonderful estate will be decorating for the season with lights. They claim to have 731 miles of lights to illuminate the gardens! The garden wonderland can be toured by car as well as those who enjoy a walk. Workshops to make Holiday Wreaths, Topiaries and Tweets (for wildlife) are scheduled for the public to enjoy.
Hills and Dales Estate: Close by Callaway is the Hills and Dale Estate, which is also hosting workshops where you can clip the greens, and make your own holiday wreath.
