Conshohocken has always had one of the best firework displays in the Philadelphia area, but this year due to budget cutbacks, the fireworks were almost lost. The annual Conshohocken July 3rd (yes, July 3rd) fireworks were on the chopping block for 2009. This is a story that many localities have had to face. According to a story in the Washington Post, more than 40 localities have already cancelled their July 4th fireworks; the refrain being "cut fireworks, not jobs".
That's when resident Liam McGuigan stepped in. A pig roast in May and a lot of hand wringing afterwards; McGuigan spearheaded a fundraising effort that raised $24,000 when $18,000 was needed. Conshohocken now has a head start on fundraising for the 2010 fireworks - because those fireworks could be threatened by the same budget woes.
Stories like this are spreading across the country as cities and towns cut their budgets. Cutting the fireworks wasn't an easy decision - but fireworks weren't at the top of the list. A shame - because it's those things that makes a community a community. The July 3rd fireworks followed up by the annual Soapbox derby (July 4th morning) are the Conshohocken signature events. The vibe in borough is palpable. Losing the fireworks would have been a big loss.
The fireworks are always preceded by a community festival at Sutcliffe Park and this year will be no different. It's a night that residents look forward to every year. Thankfully this year it won't be missing - thanks to the hard work of Liam McGuigan and the support of the following local residents and businesses.
The Conshohocken Fireworks take place at Sutcliffe Park - July 3rd at dusk.
