Nice surprise this Labor Day when I took a walk up to Bernal Hill and discovered a beautifully constructed outdoor labyrinth at the top of Bernal Hill Boulevard, opposite the water fountain and near the bulletin board.
That flat expanse of reddish rock is perfect for the labyrinth (there are actually two, side by side, one large and one smaller). The only other one I have seen in the Bay Area is located at Sibley Volcanic Preserve in the East Bay. I'm hoping that this labyrinth will have just as long a life as the Sibley labyrinths, which are walked peacefully by park visitors, who leave little tokens and mementos at the center stone.
The Bernal labyrinth seemed politely ignored by passersby, including the hordes of dogs and dogwalkers streaming past. But it does add a sacred element to the place. And then, of course, there's the mystery of who creates these things... They are always anonymous.
My girlfriend and I had to walk it, of course. If you find the labyrinth, let me know how the experience was for you.
Update: Thanks to AEL's comment below, I checked the Labyrinth Locator for San Francisco. The Bernal Heights Labyrinth is on it, and has apparently existed since August of 2008! There are 11 labyrinths in S.F., as well. Great info.
