Michael Bauer, the SF Chronicle's food critic, wrote a hiwithering review of the Liberty Cafe on Cortland today. He posed an anguished question to readers: Should he amend his earlier glowing review of the restaurant, which put it in the Top 100 restaurants in the city? The Liberty Cafe has been a neighborhood institution in Bernal for 15 years, famed for its Chicken Pot Pie and Banana Cream Pie and cozy ambience.

According to Bauer, the Cafe was sold in January after owner Cathie Guntli's death, and the food is now decidedly mediocre. Bauer (sounding genuinely conflicted) presents a picture of a restaurant in sad disarray.

Since I hadn't known the restaurant changed hands, and locals may not either, it seems newsworthy enough to pass on. But as Dr. Phil says, I don't have a dog in this fight...

And in other dismaying restaurant news, apparently The Old Clam House on Bayshore is up for sale.
