While passing the window of Heartfelt on Cortland I noticed a sign in the window that said something along the lines of "Bernal Bucks used here." So what are Bernal Bucks? I checked the Web site Bernalbucks.org and found that the currency was launched at Fiesta on the Hill on Oct. 18. Tags with the Bernal Bucks logo are available at the community center for $1 and can be placed on regular $5 or $10 bills. As an incentive, a wide variety of local merchants (Progressive Grounds, Chloe's Closet, Four Star Video among them) will offer perks to the customer using Bernal Bucks.
It is meant to be a playful way to keep dollars circulating in the neighborhood, and it will apparently benefit both the Neighborhood Center and the Bernal Heights Library campaign. So... if the spirit moves you, you know what to do. Otherwise, you will at least not be surprised when someone gives you change with a Bernal Bucks tag on it!

Happy shopping and Halloweening.
