Snack time in our household is a joyous event. The thrill of opening up the pantry doors and searching through the maze of crinkly bags and brightly colored boxes is enough to make our preschooler jump for joy. Although choices abound, especially because our pantry is stocked for armageddon, the selection usually results in the same handful of items that go in and out of the snack rotation on a daily basis.

I’m not claiming these to be the most healthful snacks on the market, but just ones that can take our kids from grumpy to giddy in a matter of bites. Here are our staples:

*Stonyfield Farms Organic Smoothies - anything that can be consumed through a straw is always a hit with the young ones.

*Trader Joe’s Cinnamon Schoolbook cookies - it’s a snack and a learning activity all in one. You can teach your kids to spell out  n-o  h-y-d-r-o-g-e-n-a-t-e-d  o-i-l-s  while they’re eating these delicious cookies.

*Pirate’s Booty - ahoy matey.

*Grapes - you can’t go wrong with real, genuine fruit.
*Applesauce - close enough to real, genuine fruit.
*Goldfish - a requisite snack for every child in America.
*Nature’s Valley Oats n’ Honey granola bars - not only portable, but there will be hundreds of granola crumbs on the floor and throughout your kids clothes that can be saved as a snack for later.

*Baby Mum Mums - some random import from China (no melamine included!) that I happened to see in the baby aisle a while back. For reasons unbeknownst to me, the kids just love them.

*And finally, la pièce de la résistance - Dunkin’ Donuts munchkins! Definitely not a regular snack occurrence, but when so, watch out for flying powdered sugar and an inevitable sugar high 20 minutes post-consumption.

What are staples at your house? I'm always looking to expand our repertoire and would love to hear what your kids go ga-ga for. With your suggestions, we could actually add another snack into the rotation. Please share your kids’ favorites below or send them to me at motherhoodexaminer@live.com.
