60-year-old woman gives birth to twins!
Ranjit Hayer is 60 years old…and just became a new mom to twins. Hayer, a native of Calgary, delivered twin boys on Tuesday morning via C-section, seven weeks prior to their due date. The Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) reports that the twins are in the neo-natal intensive care unit, but are doing well.
Hayer had been trying for decades to conceive a child and had gone through miscarriages and surgery. After being turned down in Canada for IVF due to her age, she went to India to have the procedure done last year. She initially became pregnant with triplets but had to have one of the embryos terminated due to medical reasons.
Obstetrician Dr. Colin Birch tells CBC,
"I couldn't imagine if I was 65 having two five-year-olds running around crazily. The energy to do that is incredible,"
But with all the media furor around Nadya Suleman and the birth of her octuplets (while having six other kids at home), there’s bound to be ethical questions raised about this story as well. Birch adds,
“It all sounds very fine when this age group — isn't it fantastic what medical technology can do, how we're stretching the boundaries and everything else — but there's so much more involved in this.”
As incredible as this story is, Hayer doesn’t seem to be the oldest woman to give birth.
MSNBC reported in July 2008 that another Indian woman who was 70 years old gave birth to twins! Yes, 70!
According to the CBC, Hayer said she’s just happy to be a mother. But ultimately, the thoughts go to those two little boys and I wonder how long they’ll get to have their mom in their lives.
