First Lady Michelle Obama thinks Malia and Sasha dolls are ‘inappropriate’
Since all the inauguration frenzy has quieted down, the media has turned a lot of its attention back to the Obama daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. Doll maker Ty Inc. recently debuted two new dolls from its TyGirlz line that just happen to be named “Sweet Sasha” and “Marvelous Malia.” Upon speculation about the company’s misuse of the First Daughters likeness (they did not get permission), a company spokesperson claims that the names were chosen because they are pretty and that, “There’s nothing on the dolls that refers to the Obama girls. It would not be fair to say that are exact replications of these girls. They are not.”
According to ABC News, Michelle Obama’s spokesperson issued a statement on how the First Lady feels about these dolls.
"We believe it is inappropriate to use young private citizens for marketing purposes."
Since Tuesday’s inauguration, the Obama girls have been further catapulted into the spotlight, even being credited for crashing the J. Crew Web site because of the jackets they wore to the Inauguration. It’s nothing that Michelle Obama can’t handle as a mom given her expressed desire to retain a sense of normalcy and help the girls cope with everything they will be faced with as First Daughters. Presidential press secretary Robert Gibbs told ABC,
"This is a monumental testament to Michelle. The girls have always had a very strong routine that's kept them away from all of this and all of the political campaign. They're very much the same four people that I met five years ago when I went to work for them."
