Halloween is right around the corner and children are undoubtedly counting down the days until their night of trick or treating. Parents, aside from being costume-fixers, candy inspectors and chaperones, are secondary to treats this night, but there is no reason why we can't enjoy ourselves a little bit too.

When parading your little pirates and princesses around the neighborhood on a cold autumn evening, how about having a warm and feisty beverage in hand? With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, the festivities can begin a little earlier and parents can also partake in all of the holiday fun.
This is a great idea if you are planning to have a Halloween party this year. Simply purchase some disposable hot paper cups with lids and offer a warm beverage to each adult as they are heading out the door for trick or treating. They will be appreciative that their kids aren't the only ones who are getting treats.
Here are some warm cocktail recipes to suit many tastes:

Hot Spiked Cider
2 quarts apple cider
2 cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
4 shots apple brandy

Optional garnishes: Mugs rimmed with sugar, orange twists, freshly grated nutmeg, or whipped cream

Heat cider with cloves and cinnamon. Pour a shot of apple brandy into an insulated mug and fill with cider. Serves 4.

Peppermint Spiked Hot Chocolate
6-8 ounces hot chocolate
1 1/2 ounces peppermint schnapps
peppermint stick
marshmallows

Prepare hot chocolate according to directions. Add peppermint schnapps and stir with a peppermint stick. Add marshmallows, to taste, before drinking. Serves 1.

Hot Butter Scotch Toddy recipe
1 1/2 oz Famous Grouse® Scotch whisky
1 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tbsp brown sugar
6 oz boiling water

Measure the Scotch whisky in a toddy glass. Place brown sugar or honey in a measuring cup or other heatproof small container. Spoon in butter, and pour on 2 oz (1/3) of the hot water; stir until butter and sugar are completely dissolved into a syrupy consistency (about 30 secs). Pour on the rest of the water, stir, then pour the works on top of the Scotch. Stir gently. Serves 1.
