Zabie's lunch combo - bowtie pasta salad and corn chowder
Though there are countless restaurant options available around the 3rd Street Promenade (as well as Main St.), sometimes it’s nice to get away from the more crowded areas of Santa Monica. That’s when you should head over to the much calmer Ocean Park Blvd. and check out Zabie’s, where you can sit in the sunshine and eat some grub far from the crowds and noise.
The restaurant/deli has a varied array of sandwiches and salads as well as a few breakfast items, if you happen to stop by in the earlier hours (or all day on Sat./Sun.). There’s nothing too out of the ordinary here, though there is a nice selection of soups, most of which are vegetarian.
The corn chowder should be avoided, as it’s very watery and bland – one shouldn’t have to dump half a shaker of salt into a dish just to get some flavor. But the bowtie pasta salad with chicken is delightful, served cold and tossed in a light pesto, with tasty chunks of marinated chicken breast hidden throughout.
At first glance one may think the menu doesn’t hold any great bargains, but once you’re outside the restaurant you’ll see the daily specials board, which normally offers a great lunch combo deal – any two of the following: half a sandwich, a cup of soup, half a salad, or a cold deli salad (such as the aforementioned bowtie pasta selection). The lunch combo goes for the terrific price of just $7.95.
The staff is more than friendly here, and that in addition to the small but charming patio area makes Zabie’s a great little gem on the West Side.
