Like many carnivores, the word “macrobiotic” holds certain negative connotations for me. Sure, it’s probably good for us, but just how satisfying can food be when you hold the eggs, dairy, red meat, poultry, and refined sugars?

The answer? Very satisfying indeed, if you’re eating at Culver City’s M Café de Chaya, an offshoot of the Chaya chain of restaurants.

M Café de Chaya, commonly referred to as simply “M Café,” features an impressive array of food showcasing vegetables and seafood and even offers an entire display case of sweets and desserts – yes, all made without eggs, dairy, or refined sugars.

The café has an array of delicious cold salads, and the two-salad combo for just $7.45 is an absolute steal for lunch, and the Sesame Soba Noodle salad and the Classic Coleslaw is a killer combination. The soba salad is full of sesame flavor without being oily, and the slaw, while not as creamy as I normally prefer, is so light and scrumptious that I’d happily indulge in this healthier version any day of the week.

Looking to supplement your salads with a little something extra? How about two pieces of a fresh sushi roll for $2 or $2.50? M Café has a variety of sushi available, from a garden roll to a spicy tuna roll. And one of the most unique elements on the menu is the inari sushi, a seasoned tofu pouch stuffed with brown rice and your choice of topping – the edamame and seared tuna are both phenomenal.

The café itself is bright and airy, with a very friendly staff and a fantastic patio area. They also offer to-go food as well as catering.

M Café has changed the mind of this carnivore for good – bring on the macrobiotics!
