The new “90210” aired its Halloween-themed episode this week, and the costumes were much more conservative than nearly two decades ago on “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

“Beverly Hills, 90210”/Then: Back in 1991, most of the gang from West Beverly Hills High School attended a costume party for the episode titled, “Halloween.” The party was held at an old mansion, which made for a cool and scary party.

Things got really scary, though, for Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth), when she was nearly raped by a guy dressed as a cowboy due to her provocative, bewitching costume. Luckily, her friends Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) and Donna Martin (Tori Spelling) came into the room and called for help. The scene where Dylan McKay (Luke Perry) and Steve Sanders (Ian Ziering) escorted the cowboy out of the party is classic. (Watch clip below.)

Other costumes that evening included Donna dressed as a mermaid, Steve dressed as Zorro, and boyfriend/girlfriend at the time, Brenda and Dylan, dressed as Bonnie and Clyde.

The entire episode focused on Halloween, which was nice, with Brandon Walsh (Jason Priestley) going trick-or-treating with Emily Valentine (Christine Elise) and her niece and nephew (and the drama of their disappearance), and David Silver (Brian Austin Green) hanging out with Scott Scanlon (Douglas Emerson) for an egg fight that never happened.

"90210”/Now: The new gang of West Beverly Hills High School celebrated Halloween this week (episode "Unmasked"), but in a very different way.

First of all, a Halloween party was held at the Beverly Hills Beach Club. This would have never happened on the old series, which we focused on last week. And the beach club didn’t have that cool and scary feel to it like the party the high school gang went to on the original series.

Also, it didn’t really feel like a party. Mostly everyone is broken up, so there were no fun Bonnie-and-Clyde-type couples costumes. Liam Court (Matt Lanter) didn’t even wear a costume. And it was quite a surprise that the girls’ costumes were more conservative than on the old series (even Donna’s mermaid costume was more risqué), considering the new series is so much edgier.

Adrianna Tate-Duncan (Jessica Lowndes) wore a very polished Marilyn Monroe costume, which was more sweet than sexy. Then there is Naomi Clark (AnnaLynne McCord), who is usually the edgiest of all, wearing a preppy sweater and skirt as a future California University sorority girl. This was definitely a nice change of pace, but didn’t seem to fit in the new “90210,” which has been much more provocative.

Also, the extra storylines, such as Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes) stealing a car for a movie scene and the new surfer girl, didn’t really tie everything together to make it a complete Halloween episode. But that happened in the later years of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” as well (remember "'80s Night"?), so maybe an entire episode devoted to tricks and treats is a thing of the past?

The new “90210,” which airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. (ET) on the CW network, is a spin-off of the original “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which aired from 1990-2000 on Fox.
