You got vaccinated. You wash your hands like you have OCD. You have purrell in your car, your desk, and your purse. But germs still win and you're home sick with the flu.
While it is turning out to be a really scary flu season because of the H1N1 virus, most people who come down with the virus experience mild symptoms and recover within a few days. So how do you make those sick days more bearable?
Rest and lots of fluids are important. And teas should definitely be part of your fluid intake. These teas are especially comforting while you are riding out the flu:
Peppermint tea. Because it has menthol, peppermint tea is relieves congestion, soothes sore throats and calms coughs. Trader Joe's has a peppermint tea worth brewing.
Chamomile tea. Chamomile tea is best known to help you relax and sleep. Catching a lot of zzzs in turn will help your body heal faster. (Try Yogi Comforting Chamomile or Stash Premium Organic Tea)
Licorice tea. This tea calms the stomach, relieves sore throats and quiets coughs. Even if you don't like licorice, you'll probably like this tea. Choice Organic's Licorice Mint tea is a good bet.
Lemon tea. Packed with Vitamin C, lemon tea neutralizes harmful free radicals. Definitely a "must" to combat the flu. And It's so easy to make. Heat a mug of water in the microwave. Add the juice of one lemon. Add honey to taste. For a ready made tea, Zhena's Gypsy Tea Lemon Jasmine is one of my favorites.
Ginger tea. Ginger helps with nausea, dizziness and calms upset stomachs. It also minimizes other flu symptoms. For ginger tea, I like making my own. Nothing beats the punch of homemade, fresh ginger tea. But an ok brand to try is Tazo Tea's Green Ginger.
Of course, if you're on medication, it's always good to consult your doctor if it's ok to drink certain kinds of tea.
