Contrary to popular belief it isn't necessary to spend thousand's of dollars on a handbag. There are many, many inexpensive options out there (read under $100) that will do the job and will bring one's ensemble up to speed, however one must choose wisely. Many of the less expensive bags depend on leather substitutes, or pleather, in order to keep costs down, which many times looks just that - PLASTIC. For instance, bag number one shown to the left screams pleather with it's overly shiny material, and enormous metal accents it's quite obvious that this particular bag didn't cost an arm and a leg, in fact it comes it at a mere $34.50, and it shows. A cheap looking bag paired with a sophisticated ensemble is entirely discredititing to the individual's level of taste and should be avoided at all cost. Skip bags with unattractive rivets, but be mindful of attractive metal accents that give Chanel, Balenciaga, and Marc Jacobs bags a certain stylish swagger. Also stay away from super shiny black bags that clearly do not resemble honest leather, and finally don't go for satchels with thick "ribbons" of the same material that loop through hugely disproportionate holes.

The quilted bag featured right is a fabulous example of a cheap chic bag. In contrast to the first bag, the less shiny round rivets add a little edge to the conservative feel of the quilting, and the chain-link shoulder strap shows just enough metal and subtle weaving. While this sophisticated bag isn't TRUE leather, it's easy to mistake. The quilted nature of the bag and the texture of the pleather make this bag truly look leather-like, and would most likely fool the masses. A bag such as this is great for work or pleasure and is classic and versatile enough to be worn season after season and year after year. The best part? This gem of a bag is a mere $

In reference to the last clutch featured to the left, it's important to first discuss color. The burgundy/purple hue of this evening accessory makes it a dead giveaway that leather was left out during the manufactuing process, and again, the brillant shine and luster, proudly trumpets plastic all the way. What else cheapens this look? The oval shaped "handle" that will not only lead to a juggling act if at a cocktail
party, but also is an un eye appealing shape, with the bright silver metal screaming for unnecessary attention. Instead, choose a clutch without an inset handle and go for one that can be slipped under the arm. OR, if a strap is a MUST, try one that is unobtusive and will hang delicatly a couple inches from your wrist as the one featured to the right from katespade.com.
