It's that time of year here in DC when those who keep seasonal closets are making the switch. I usually recommend against separating clothes by season but in a city where space is expensive, sometimes it's just necessary to store out of season clothes. Just don't short change your wardrobe by storing some of those "summer" pieces that with a little creativity could be carried into fall and even winter. What you'll need to make the switch: cardigans, jackets, hosiery/leggings, sweaters, scarves and boots. Here are some pieces to think twice about before putting them away for the next six months:
Summer Dresses: So many summer dresses can be worn year round just by layering them up. Put tights underneath the dress and a cardigan on top, throw on a pair of boots and you're ready for fall. You can even throw a pull on sweater over a dress and make it look like a skirt or put a light weight sweater under the dress for added warmth and sleeves. Layer up with a scarf and coat as it gets even colder out.
Summer Skirts: Similar transition to the summer dress. Layer it up. Tuck in a light weight sweater and add a belt. Then put on leggings and boots.
White Jeans/Pants: You can wear white after Labor Day. White jeans with a cable knit sweater and driving shoes is very fall chic. Or try a coordinated top and blazer with boots. Layer up with scarves, belts and sweaters and you can wear your white jeans all year long.
Open Toe/Peep Toe Heels: You can actually wear open toed and peep toed shoes with hosiery for the fall. Save them for the summer if the shoes go between your toes at all but a little black opaque tight peeking out of a peep toe pump is perfect for this season. Just don't try this with nude hose, choose a fashion forward pair or black.
Tank Tops: Tank tops can be layered up like many of your other summer pieces. Put cardigans or v-neck sweaters over them and pair them with jeans and boots. Or top off your tank top with a blazer and tuck it into your pencil skirt for work, layered up with hosiery. You can even put a light weight sweater or turtle neck underneath the tank top to show off a statement piece.
What else will you all carry from summer to fall?
