Keir

A local artist who simply goes by the name of Keir (Key-Air) is going above and beyond by creating a positive shift in today’s music. Keir is utilizing his poetic verses and knowledge of music to compose works that inspire and send positive messages to people everywhere.

Keir grew up on the west side of Detroit and had originally set his sights on becoming an engineer. After graduating from Michigan State University with a bachelors degree in packaging engineering, Keir started working at one of the “big three” car companies in Detroit. Success was soon to follow Keir as he moved up to a supervisory position and became industrial engineer. He learned the inner workings of the automobile business and excelled at problem solving as he interacted with different departments. Amid Kier’s success in the auto industry his mind began shifting into writing songs and poems. Throughout his day Keir was crafting verses and melodies in his mind that became a fountain of creativity that could not be contained. As the days passed the urge to turn these thoughts into reality grew stronger. Soon Keir started to attend a local poetry venue called the Key Club in downtown Detroit. This is where Keir began to share his works and take part in a nurturing environment that would further inspire him to write and perform. One day while reciting a written poem at the Key Club an audience member suggested that Keir memorize his work for the purpose of presentation. Keir took this suggestion to heart and committed to perfecting his work with the help of seasoned poets.

Kier gained the skills he needed at the Detroit Recording Institute of Detroit to record, mix and master his own projects. He was moved to start his own workshops promoting and teaching poetry at places such as the Detroit Main Library and Wayne County Community College. His current goals include creating a positive influence in the community through the medium of poetry. In his song titled “The Message” Kier explores the negative affects of music videos and magazines that glamorize drugs, money and sex. As a poet the word “change” is very important to Kier. “Action needs to be taken now to make changes for people, families and communities,” Keir proclaimed. Keir is a man of influence who looks to create changes in the present moment.

Keir has performed at Poetry Pages and Scribes, The Key Club, Detroit Festival of the Arts, Max M Fisher, Campus Martius and the Music Hall among others. He has opened shows for Dr. Bill Cosby, The Last Poets, R&B artist Dwele and more. Keir has taken part in a special performance for Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. Currently Keir operates as a one man label and looks to expand his operation in the near future as he works to network, travel and continue spreading his positive message. His works are a fusion of Jazz, Neo-Soul and Hip Hop that is appropriate for people of all ages and is available on CDbaby.
