Karma Qsaay Williams is cultivating a multitude of inspiration throughout the metro Detroit area. He is currently promoting the Sweet Epiphany cultural establishment, leading a band of artistic innovators, creating positive changes in people’s lives and finding time to recite his personal poems.
Karma’s insightful writings combined with his powerful delivery creates an inviting and entrancing style that is a trademark all his own. Many friends and admirers came out to see Karma perform on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Beat Café in Warren. After the show Karma spent some time talking about his poetical beginnings, current projects and future plans.
Karma explained how his father excited his interest in poetry during his youth.
“It all started when I was seven years old and my father gave me an album by The Last Poets”
stated Karma. Karma was intrigued by the writing style of Edgar Allen Poe. One of his favorite poems is “Tell Tale Heart”. At the time school seemed to be his only outlet for poetry. His significant role in the poetry arena would not blossom until later in life. At age 30 Karma created a poetry night at Combo’s Hot Wings, his family owned business in Memphis, Tennessee. He enthusiastically continued to work on promoting his night and watched as the attendance increased.
This venue is where Karma met his beautiful wife Jennifer and the idea for Sweet Epiphany was born. Jennifer and Karma decided to bring their creative ideas to Detroit after talking to poets in the area. They received encouragement to bring their cultural hub to the Motor City in June of 2009 (See previous article about Sweet Epiphany, Detroit).
Karma recently signed Jasmine Glenn’s 1am lyrical Café to host a Sunday evening event at Sweet Epiphany. As part of the growing cultural establishment the legendary Echoverse Detroit Poetry event will take place at Sweet Epiphany starting January 8, 2010.
Karma and Jennifer are combining an array of talent and forming something unique that transcends boundaries of race and ethnicity, a place where everyone is able to express themselves.
“I believe that when you find the beautiful minds to show the universal spirit that resides in all of us no matter the color, you open a catalyst for dialogue,” proclaimed Karma. Sweet Epiphany is not just about great music, poetry and a relaxing atmosphere it is a place where the owners care about people. Karma and Jennifer have implemented a higher code of ethics at their establishment. They are leading people to live better and more productive lives. Sweet Epiphany along with their partner Troubadour 21 is encouraging diversity in the poetry world. Together they are setting an example by sending forth a philosophy of unity that will encourage people here and around the world.
