Dieters beware when it comes to ordering fast food burgers. The trend for premium burgers is on the rise. But fat, calories and sodium are on the rise too. While these burgers may seem like a bargain to your budget, they are no friend to your waistline or your health!
Calories
For a person who needs 2000 calories per day to maintain their weight (remember, many women need less than this) you would be getting ½ or more of your daily calories from just one item! Add fries and a soft drink and you’ve blown most of your day. That doesn’t leave much for your other meals!
Fat & Saturated Fat
The American Heart Association recommends less than 25-35% of your total calories come from fat. For that same person needing 2000 calories, this means no more than 55 – 78 grams of fat max per day. These burgers range from more than half, to double your daily allotment.
When it comes to saturated fat, all but one burger blows through the daily limit of less than 7% of your calories or no more than 15 grams of saturated fat per day (based on 2000 calories per day).
If you eat these very often, you’d better have your cardiologist on speed dial!
Sodium
Just when you think it can’t get any worse for you, there’s the sodium content. If you’re trying to follow the recommendations for less than 2300 mg per day, you’ll have a hard time if you’re eating any of these.
But don’t despair; you can still eat fast food and fit into your clothes the next day. The secret is portion control and common sense. If it looks big, greasy, and has bacon, cheese and sauces it’s not going to be good for you.
If you’re looking for a burger, bigger isn’t always better. Go for the smaller burger without all the fatty additions. Fill in with a salad and if that doesn’t feel like enough, then you’re better off with a plain grilled chicken sandwich.
If you jonesing for a good burger then your best bet is to make it yourself. Lean meat, add your own seasonings and save yourself the trouble of having to work off all those extra fat and calories later!
