Located in East Moriches just north of Merrick Road (Route 80) between Cemetery Road and Mill Pond Lane, is Kahlers Pond. Also known as Mill Pond, this 13 acre pond produces some fine catches of largemouth bass, chain pickerel, carp, stocked brown and rainbow trout as well as pan fish, which include some of the biggest yellow perch I have ever seen anywhere.

Anglers interested in taking advantage of the fine action can do so either by fishing along the shoreline or by hand launched boats. Kahlers Pond is accessible to anyone wishing to fish it. There is sufficient hassle free parking located along the southwest side of the pond at Brookhaven Park located on Merrick Road (Route 80). The parks amenities include well maintained, and clean restrooms as well as a playground for the young ones to keep occupied when they become bored. Hand launched Jon and rowboats (no gas motors allowed) as well as canoes can be launched from the beach area inside the park.

Shore bound anglers will find the shoreline along the south side of the pond not only accessible, but quite productive as well.
Anglers casting surface lures such as Jitterbugs or diving crank baits among the vegetation will be kept busy with the largemouth and pickerel population. For those casting natural baits such as night crawlers, grubs, shiners, wax worms or any of Berkley’s new jarred Gulp! Baits, it’s a potpourri of action as it’s anyone guess of what may come up next. If you want a shot at a big carp, bread or dough balls will do the trick.

Boaters that explore this pond will find the plenty of structure such as broken timber, Lilly pads and grass beds located in 3 to six feet of water, and scattered around the pond. These are the ideal areas to target when searching for ambushing bass and pickerel. Look for trout along the deeper pockets or in areas where underwater springs are evident. You can often have a blast with the pan fish while working the banks and fallen timber along the shoreline.

Remember that anyone over the age of 16 will require a New York State freshwater license in order to fish Kahlers or for that fact any state maintained lake or pond. Let it be fair warning that DEC Officers checks this pond for violators on a daily basis. Therefore if you intend on keeping all or part of your catch, make certain to familiarize yourself with state regulations.
