With the 20th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft the Utah Jazz selected Eric Maynor. Maynor is a senior point guard from Virginia Commonwealth University. Maynor was initially scheduled to work out for the Jazz this past Saturday, but he pulled out because of back spasms. The Jazz brought Maynor back in on the eve of the draft for an interview. Obviously, the Jazz liked what they heard.
Maynor averaged 22.4 points and 6.2 assists per game for the Rams during his senior season. He may not have the same top level athleticism that many of the other point guards in this year's draft possess, but he's a cerebral player who knows how to win.
He burst onto the national stage after an impressive performance in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. He scored 22 points and dished out 8 assists while leading a VCU upset of the heavily favored Duke Blue Devils.
Unlike many of the players in this draft, Maynor will be able to step in and contribute immediately. He's a player who made noticeable improvements throughout his collegiate career, and should continue to improve. This is a productive and solid pick by Utah Jazz.
