Logging in today should display a nice message that reads: As of 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13, usernames can be chosen for Facebook accounts to "easily direct friends, famild and coworkers" to profiles. More information is located on the Facebook blog.

The highlights are:

  • Usernames on selected on a first-come, first-serve basis
  • Pick usernames by visiting www.facebook.com/username/. You'll also see a notice on your home page with instructions for obtaining your username at that time.
  • Usernames will appear in URLs to make profiles easier to find
  • Usernames must be at least five characters and only alphanumeric (A-Z, 0-9)

So far 12,992 clicked to like this change, while 12,759 chose to share comments. Feedback is pouring in from around the world. Some are for the change, some are concerned about squatting on names and others are happy. Change is never easy.
