How about lions, no tigers, but bears... oh my! Did you know the Holtsville Park and Ecology Site houses over 100 injured or non-releasable wild and farm animals? Which include strange species such as the bear-cat as well as the noble American bald eagle. Two very large black bears entertain onlookers and the mountain lion will undoubtedly satisfy any big cat curiosity. Children will certainly be tickled by one very large and friendly pig, which adds to the diversity of the site. Want to play I Spy? You can feed the goats and ducks for only a quarter and general admission is completely free. The ecology site is open seven days a week with the exception of New Years Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Did you know, Cal Rodgers in 1911 flew a Wright bi-plane in the first transcontinental flight starting on Long Island and ending in California? It only took 49 days! Another moment in the history of aviation was in 1923, the first non-stop transcontinental flight starting right here on Long Island and also ending in California! Talk about spreading your wings! You can learn more about Long Island and it’s historical role in aviation at The Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City which houses over 60 aircraft and spacecraft. Call (516) 572-4111 for more details.
I bet you didn’t know that the Long Island Greenbelt Trails are made up of roughly 101 miles of beautiful hiking trails! Consisting of three separate trails, one in particular The Long Island Trail, runs from The Great South Bay all the way to the Long Island Sound! The two other paths, The Nassau-Suffolk and The Pine Barren, are just as beautiful and rewarding to traverse. I strongly recommend comfortable walking shoes! Check out the website below for more details.
Hey! What about Charles Lindbergh? Did you know he took off from Roosevelt Field on Long Island for the first non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. I wonder if he started talking to himself?
Another interesting Long Island tidbit I bet you didn’t know about is located in Watermill on Long Island. This is where you will find the only town to have both a working watermill and windmill in the United States! With today’s focus on energy, I would say these folks have the right idea!
And finally, did you know that the Montauk Point Lighthouse was the first to be built in the state of New York and was commissioned by Congress serving under President George Washington? It remains today the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the U.S. Get the "point"!
If you think Long Island is interesting now, just wait until you read the next segment of "Did you know?".
