As a child there were two things (other than opening gifts!) that I relished this time of the year. The first was waking up to the delicious scent of a turkey roasting in the oven. The second was driving around looking at all of the holiday decorations and Christmas lights that seemed to turn any neighborhood into a true wonderland. In the spirit of the upcoming holiday season I have discovered a few holiday pleasures that anyone visiting or living on Long Island should absolutely experience! Enjoy!

Let’s begin our holiday treat list with an event that will hopefully become an annual tradition to be cherished for years to come. Montauks 2008 First Annual Christmas, Lighting the Light will be taking place on Saturday, November 29th from 4-7pm. At dusk, the Montauk Point Lighthouse, which has been fitted with thousands of Christmas lights, will brighten the East End like never before. Parking will be free as well as admission, however; the museum and the tower climb will be closed. The gift shop will be open, and refreshments will be served. There will also be music and a special visit by, “you-know-who”! The rain date is set for December 6th for the same time.    I strongly urge you to take part in this amazing event and help this become one of Long Islands greatest traditions! If you are unable to make the event, the lighthouse will be illuminated every night after at dusk until January 6th, 2009.

Since we are already visiting the East End, another Montauk tradition should be mentioned. Saturday and Sunday, December 6th and 7th, between 11am and 4pm Islanders will enjoy, “Christmas at the Lighthouse”. Hot cider and holiday treats will be served and the museum and gift shop will be open. (Please note the tower climb will be closed) A Christmas trio will be entertaining you with festive music, pony rides and pictures with that jolly old elf will be available. Admission for this event will be free, and it is weather permitting.    For further information about both events please call 631-668-2544.

Be careful not to get your feet wet! On Sunday, November 23rd at 6pm you can behold a true festival of lights! Boaters from all over the area will be parading their vessels which have been adorned with thousands of lights. The Patchogue Boat Parade can be viewed best from the Fire Island National Seashore ferry terminal located off of West Avenue in Patchogue. Sandspit Park at Brightwood Street as well as Mascot Dock at the end of South Ocean Avenue are also great places to grab a peek.
This year’s theme: The World-United. You can visit the website below for more details.

The Town of Brookhaven Ecology Site, Park and Animal Preserve is certainly getting in the holiday spirit! Located in Holtsville on Buckley Road, the site will host the Brookhaven Brite Nites Drive-Through Light Show starting on November 28th the day after Thanksgiving.  Admission begins at 4:30 pm.  The cost is $12 a car load but coupons are available at www.brookhavenbritenites.com.   There will be a tree lighting and a very special visit by Santa via helicopter, so be sure to get there at 4:30!  Brite Nites runs from 5:30-9:30pm until January 4th.  You can call 631-758-9664 for more information.

The Old Bethpage Village Restoration has a very special theme planned for the last two weekends in November. Saturday and Sundays from November 22nd until the 30th, guests of the village can see demonstrations of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, enjoy historical musical programs and get a very real life feel for life during the 19th century. Admission is $10 and only $7 for children between the ages of 4-14 years and for anyone over the age of 60. For more information call 516-572-8400.

I hope you enjoy some, if not all of these wonderful holiday festivities. There’s plenty more to come!
