Basketball great Shaquille O'Neal is a highly visible personality. In addition to his time spent on the court, Shaq has also appeared on the silver screen and attempted a rap career.
What people may not know (me included) is that Shaq has a huge interest in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) and has been taking part in training for the past ten years. While mostly training for the cardio and strength benefits at an elite facility on Orlando, Shaq -- aka Diesel in the MMA world -- takes part in regular sparring matches inside the octagon-shaped fighting stage. Are you kidding? What man in their right mind would casually "spar" with Shaq? A kick to the shins from Shaq is like getting swiped with a 2x4.
One man that might be up to the challenge is bad-ass veteran MMA fighter and Ultimate Fighter, Chuck Liddell. Shaq has requested a match with the Liddell, though all in the name of fun. For obvious reasons, there is a weight limit of 285 lbs. for MMA fighters, so this wouldn't be a sanctioned fight. However, this is a fight I want to see. Even though Liddell is clearly more skilled in the sport, I find it hard to beleive that he could take Shaq. The monster of a man would just be too hard to bring down and the effort would eventually exhaust Liddell. Whether Liddell accepts is still up in the air, but I for one hope he does.
You have to hand it to Shaq -- he continues to stay interesting and relevant, keeping him in the news and gaining a wide net of fans. Whatever Shaq does, he always seems to have a smile on his face, and a even a feared man like Liddell couldn't wipe it off.
