The Colts snagged the nation's leading rusher, Donald Brown, on Saturday in the first round of the NFL draft. A short day later, Donald and his family made their way to Indianapolis for an official welcome.
By now, everyone knows the hype surrounding Brown. In 2008, he led the country in rushing with 2,083 yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging 5.7 yards a carry. He hails from the University of Connectiut, marking the University's first-ever player to be selected as first or second round draft pick. Brown is also a solid catcher, making him even more valuable.
The addiiton of Brown was necessary for the Colts. After losing Dominic Rhodes this month, the team needed to fill a big running back hole. Rhodes provided something that Joseph Addai struggles with, which is running hard. Addai failed to impress last season and it was surprising we didn't look to Rhodes for more series. To be fair, Addai was banged up last year (as was the offensive line), but he seemed to run timid even after his recovery. But, with no contract offer to Rhodes this year, it's a moot point.
Many thought that the Colts would take a wide receiver or defensive tackle as the first pick, but tapping Brown shows that Addai may finally be losing favor with Colts management. Let's hope that Brown can come in and make an immediate impact -- and that the Colts will not limit his carries when the offense is clicking with him in the mix. Brown is already up for the challenge, expressing a strong work ethic when asked about his immediate action plan with the team:
"Just show up to work everyday bring my lunch pail. That's about it. I'm ready to work hard and ready to help the team anyway I can," Donald said."
