Looking for a city job/AP

With the beautiful weather here in the Memphis area this past weekend most of us were doing other things rather than reading the newspaper.

That may be why the story of what appears to be rampant nepotism within the  city General Services Division, in violation of city policy, was broken on this past Sunday by the Commercial Appeal.

The most flagrant and repeated violators appear to be the Boone family. The former director of the GS Division, Estrice Boone, was recently fired by Mayor A.C. Wharton when reporters began inquiring about the operations of the division.

Boone had at least three relatives working in the division in the last year. He also intervened on behalf of other relatives working in the division to get more hours, exceeding the maximum allowed for temporary workers.

The Boone family was not the only the only group involved in this type of activity, there were others. Some of them directly supervising their relatives.

GS Services Operations Administrator Wesley Arijie, the fifth highest paid civil servant in Memphis government has his daughter, Eyitayo Antwine, on the payroll. He said that he has no influence on her employment  nor has received any special favors (not that your daddy being head of the department would have any sway over your immediate supervisor, huh?).

A.C. Wharton, sensing possible political fallout leaped into action and now Chief Admin Officer George Little is conducting a review of personnel practices.

Said Little, " We will implement management based intervention around problems identified and we will definitely take appropriate action with respect to any policies that have been disregarded or rules broken by current employees'.

This amount to political gibberish meaning that the Wharton administration will cover its rear end and select heads will roll to protect the mayor and his cronies at the highest levels.

Perhaps the city should use Ancestry.com to hire its workforce instead of a job application.
