People of faith every where are outraged at the actions of some teachers and the attitude displayed by the administrators of B. Bernice Young Elementary School in Burlington, New Jersey. By now almost everyone in America has seen the YouTube video of approximately 20 second graders singing what appears to be a revised version of "Jesus Loves The Little Children" using President Obama's name in lieu of Jesus. The film was made in February and released by an unknown party in June. Since it's release the fire storm has been building and parents of the school children pictured in the video are fit to be tied and they want answers.
According to Foxnews.com (which seemed to be the only site carrying this story for some strange reason) the principal of the school, Dr. Denise King was unapologetic about the issue and would allow the children to sing the song again, this according to parents who spoke to her about the incident. Superintendent Christopher Manno was more upset about the film being taken and released on YouTube than the fact that the kids were singing what many believe to be political propaganda. He wrote in a note to the parents, "the recording and distribution of the class activity were unauthorized".
The reason many people, especially those people of faith, are upset about this is the fact that many within the teaching profession have gone out of their way in supporting the idea that God has no place in the classroom. Teachers unions, administrators, and yes parents, have filed lawsuits in many different venues decrying the fact that a student has led a prayer, or a teacher has read a paragraph from the Bible to the class, or that a coach has had the team kneel down on the field for a brief prayer. We have all heard the news of these protests and subsequent lawsuits. They are advocated in many cases by the same people who want "In God We Trust" taken off of our money and off of our government buildings. They wail about the separation of Church and state then invite politicians to speak at their school assemblies and in their church pulpits, as long as the politician in question supports their views.
There is no place in our public schools for any type of indoctrination whether it be political, religious, or social. Public schools are supported by tax payer dollars and all of the employees of pubic schools are paid from this same source. Administrators and teachers have a unique responsibility to avoid any political, religious, or other influences when it comes to teaching our children. Parents should be the only arbiter of when and where these concepts should be taught. If we want our children to have a religious education we will send them to private religious schools. If we want them to know about politics, we will teach them.
This incident should be a wake up call for all parents with children in public school. As parents and people of faith, no matter what that faith may be, we have an inherent right to expect that the taxes we pay should be used to educate our children in the fundamentals of life, reading, writing, language, math, and not anyone's political, or social agenda. As parents we also have the inherent responsibility to know what it is our children are being taught, and if we disagree, take appropriate action.?
A famous person once said something quite profound when it comes to the education of children in a society; " He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future".
