From its modest street-side appearance you would never know that the Bazaar Café is home to one of the most opulent gardens in the Richmond District. If you head out the side door you’ll find yourself in a verdant heaven of leafy trees, flowering plants, and folksy wooden tables, chairs, and benches, all perfect for soaking up a prized spot of sun. The Bazaar Café’s back patio and garden is not a haven for smokers, although you may find one or two, but more a peaceful place to sip a beverage, read, or tap away on your laptop.
The other thing that’s so unique about this coffee house is that it’s a hot spot for local artists, musicians, and writers. The Bazaar Café hosts weekly open-mic nights as well as weeknight and weekend performances. In June alone, patrons could hear a variety of singer/songwriters, an evening of cello music, an acoustic guitar showcase, and several other bands. A monthly calendar is available on the café’s website.
Starting at 7:00 pm, the café opens its doors and offers up unique entertainment, all for the price of a bite to eat or something to drink. And in addition to the usual selection of coffee, tea, juice, Italian soda, and espresso drinks, the Bazaar has a liquor license, so you can also choose from beer, port, and mead or plum wine; hot warm or cold sake and sake cocktails; and wine by the bottle or glass.
The menu is also unusual in that it features several un-coffee-house-like specialties including chicken curry, an unagi (eel) or teriyaki bowl, and crunchy wasabi popcorn. Standards include several Panini sandwiches, a tuna melt, a jumbo hot dog, and a PB&J. Daily soup and quiche specials round out the menu, along with several salads from spinach to chicken breast. Bagels topped with everything from butter or cream cheese to hummus with tomato, and lox and capers are served in the morning. Sweet include cakes, pies, cookies, ice cream, and assorted pastries.
While the food and drink is fine, the Bazaar Café is a place to meet like-minded friends who want to listen to some music or lounge in the bountiful garden till the fog rolls in.
