Just so you know, weekends start on Wednesday at Pat O’Brien's. Known as Pat O’s to the regulars, it’s the place to go in San Antonio if you’re looking for that New Orleans Cajun atmosphere. Excellent food during the day (I’d recommend the Shrimp Creole); it turns into the bar it’s known for at night. The establishment is compartmentalized into three rooms, don’t worry though, there are bars in every room so one won’t wander far for a drink.
The first room upon entry is the outdoor patio, with the famous Flaming Fountain. A giant goblet with a constant fire is centered in a pool of water which is also sprayed up at the flame. The fountain is also lit by changing colors, reflecting off the water and giving ambiance to the bar. On select nights, this is where live jazz music is performed. I’m not a huge fan of jazz, so I spent most of the night in the following room.
The next attraction Pat O’s offers is its cornerstone of the dueling pianos. People will write their song requests on napkins, give them to the pianists with a tip, and hear their favorite song played on two pianos. I personally love going to the bar and hearing the Counting Crows’ version of Big Yellow Taxi, but I’ve heard them play everything from Michael Jackson to Ozzy Osbourne.
The last room in Pat O’s is the nightclub. Upstairs from the patio, the DJ spins music you that will make you dance. While everything about the club is good, it isn’t anything different from the better experience one can get at other clubs. My advice is to stick to the aforementioned rooms to really experience Pat O’s.
Their drink specials are ridiculous at Wacky Wednesdays. Almost anything in the bar is $2, Patrón and Grey Goose shots are $3, and their most famous drink, the Hurricane, is $4. Normally costing $6.50, you definitely get your bang for your buck at the reduced cost. Trust me when I say to take it easy with these, they give you a wicked hangover. The cocktail itself is four ounces of rum, four ounces of their special Hurricane Mix, filled with crushed ice, and garnished with an orange slice and a cherry. Cover is $5 after 8pm but the drink specials start at 7pm, so get there early and you’ll avoid the cover and still benefit from the specials.
