It’s a hard fact the would put most salesmen out of work, but the best businesses advertise by word-of-mouth.
John’s Sneaks is just such an enterprise, a family-run hole-in-the-wall shoe outlet in a suburb of western Philadelphia, where the founder of the business is known as “Uncle John”.
The word-of-mouth travels through nearby Haverford College’s athletic community, whose members make regular pilgrimages to the Ardmore store, one room packed floor to ceiling with sneakers in mint condition of all description. The “Ardmore Youth” are similar regular patrons, as are adults and children from nearby Havertown.
Clients have been known to come from as far as Wilmington, Delaware for the prices. How do they sell the sneaks so cheap? We’re talking an average cost of $30-40 for $90 running shoes.
“Oh, you know, somewhere they fell off the back of a truck,” John jokes. In fact, the reason is plain to see: no overhead, no advertising, no staffing.
The business John founded is established enough to put itself on Philadelphia Main Line philanthropic letterhead with such luminaries as the Bryn Mawr Trust bank.
